“I had worked out off and on for most of my adult life with acceptable results. However, after a few years of decreased activity I noticed the pounds going on, my energy level was falling and body fat going up. In the Fall of 2010 I finally decided something needed to change and began looking for a Personal Trainer. After careful research, I found Brian Maher of Philly Personal Training. I was impressed with Brian’s education, certification and approach. I have been working out with Brian twice a week since. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made!
In a few short months I lost 20 pounds and reduced my body fat by more than 5%. Then, with Brian’s coaching and running plans I ran the Broad Street Run, a Half Marathon and the Philadelphia Marathon within the first year of training with him. It had been 20 years since I had run on a regular basis and never competed in a race longer than a 5K. Running a marathon had been in the back of mind for about 20 years but I am sure it would not have happened if I had not started training with Brian.
Brian is extremely knowledgeable about fitness, nutrition and motivation. We regularly talk about goals and set new goals as achievements are made. His routine evaluations are helpful not only to track progress and measure results but to refine goals. We have worked out together for more than a year now and I don’t think two workouts have ever been exactly the same! He is great at adding new exercises and changing routines to ensure your fitness goals are met and to keep you focused, motivated and interested during every session. He often has a new “surprise” for me that is fun and challenging. He continues to push me to new levels!
Brian understands that good health and fitness doesn’t happen in a couple of sessions a week and he provides you with the tools you need to make the changes in your daily life. Whether that be a meal plan; or nutritional counseling; or a running/walking plan; or an exercise routine to do “solo”; or motivational tips to keep you focused on your goal. Brian has easily adapted workout routines and nutritional information as my goals changed. I look forward to my training sessions with Brian – it’s the best part of my week! During our training sessions I work harder and smarter than I ever could have by myself.

When we first began my program, I had three goals – lose weight, increase strength and improve endurance. “In May of 2010, my father had major heart surgery which pushed me to take a look at my personal risks and the action I needed to take to reduce those risks. In June, I made the decision to begin a fitness program with an individual who was highly educated as a Personal Fitness Trainer. The education was very important to me as I wanted someone who could ensure my safety regarding how much I should do and how fast when exercising. I was very fortunate to have found that in Brian Maher of Philly Personal Training. Prior to working with Brian I lost 9 pounds and went from a size 12 to 10 by changing my eating habits but I could not get my weight down any further and my cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar numbers were still high. Brian put me on a meal plan and an exercise regimen that brought my high cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar down to normal ranges within 5 months. My doctor is now looking at taking me off of my blood pressure medicine which is a goal I never thought I would achieve. In addition, I lost 30 pounds during that 5 months and went from a size 10 to a size 0. I feel better than I have felt in 12 years and confident that I can maintain my weight and health numbers due to the education and confidence I have gained during my tenure with Brian. In addition, due to being in this program I am getting reduced rates on my health insurance at work.
Prior to working with Brian, I would workout by myself but never pushed myself as I was scared due to my age and being out of shape. About 4 years ago my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, after completion of chemotherapy and radiation our family decided to support my mothers fight against breast cancer in the Susan G. “I started coming to Philly Personal Training in April and it has already made a huge difference for me!
First of all, their monthly rates are pretty reasonable, especially since it comes with two nutrition consultation sessions and workouts that you can do at home.
My trainer is Elizabeth and honestly she’s awesome. My 30 minute sessions fly by really quick and I get a really good workout in each time. She’s also super friendly, easy to talk to, and really encouraging, which makes coming to the sessions really easy. I don’t feel at all intimidated by her or judged for how I look or how I do during the sessions.
The registered dietician, Theresa, is awesome too. From the first session, she already had concrete goals for me to make with my diet, and it has made all the difference.

“As a former collegiate athlete, it was hard to admit that I needed a personal trainer to get myself back into shape. “Rachel Rocks! Results are everything, and Philly Personal Training gets results. I ran this year’s Philadelphia Marathon and I shaved 10 minutes off my time, and in doing so earned a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. And, more remarkably, my post-race recovery has been wholly uneventful: one week after the race I am back to my usual distance (including a 10 mile run this morning). It was an increasing frequency of injuries that made it clear to me that running as a sole means of exercise wasn’t enough: the lack of balanced muscle use and no core strength training was making me prone to injury. I especially admire Elizabeth’s ability to modify workouts based on individual needs. For instance, I sometimes experience upper back tightness or lower back weakness. No problem; Elizabeth finds a way to adjust – not by eliminating exercises, but by finding appropriate alternatives to work towards the same goal in a different way. I continue to be amazed by her background, experience and capability in this area. She also loves explaining (because I’m always asking her lots of questions!) the thinking and process behind her workout designs and the best ways towards my goals.
Speaking of goals…From the start, Elizabeth has listened to my goals and, in effect, made them her own and has been committed to helping me reach them. Was my initial goal of bench pressing my body weight silly or not that important to my overall fitness? Perhaps. But Elizabeth embraced the goal because it was important to me. In just two months of working together, my bench press has increased almost 50%! And just this week – right on target – we hit my goal to bench press my body weight! I’m super excited by this accomplishment and can’t wait to work on our next set of goals, which we are working to develop together.
Finally, did I mention Elizabeth has a wonderfully bubbly personality and great sense of humor? Well, she does. Working out with her might be physically challenging, but it is a ton of fun!

“I guess the best place to start is at the beginning. Last January, I woke up and my left knee was roughly 3 times the size of my right. After an x-ray, mri, and fluid draining, my doctor suggested I work on strengthening my body so I can take some of the pressure off of my knee. I had read an article Brian wrote, and decided to give him a call. After 2 or 3 reschedule, all my doing, we finally had the chance to meet and talk. I pretty much knew after 15 minutes or so that I was going to sign up. I liked the fact that the studio is small and private. I did not want any part of some chain gym. He paid attention to everything I said and never tried to hard sell me. Naturally, he mentioned things that make Philly Personal Training unique, specifically all of the trainers having degrees in a particular, relevant discipline. He immediately understood the situation with my knee and what my doc wanted me to do. I started working out with Elizabeth the following week. I had no idea what to expect, but after 3 months I can honestly say this is the best I’ve felt in a long time. My knee feels so much better, and even the everyday things are much easier. She does a great job of making the workouts challenging but manageable. We have some great conversation, we laugh, but she pushes me when I need it, which is pretty much every workout. After reading about Philly Personal Training, I kept looking at other places but nothing stood out as much as this place. I booked an appointment that same week. If you have any questions or concerns, they will respond very quickly. I sent Brian an email, I got a response back within 30 minutes. I have never had a problem with them.They are very welcoming. “Short version: Professional, capable, friendly, clean, effective, good value — stellar. Ask for Elizabeth. Long version: I am a guy north of 50 and have not really exercised in years…don’t really enjoy it or have discipline to stick with it, until I found Philly Personal Training. “I’ve been training with Elizabeth at Philly Personal Training since September and I’m extremely happy with the progress I’ve made and the experience I’ve had so far. I’ve worked out many times before in my life but I would end up falling off and found it difficult to get motivated and stick with something longer than the 3 months before swimsuit season!
I decided that my ‘on again off again pattern’ wasn’t working and if I wanted to get serious, I should invest in a personal trainer. I’m convinced that this is the best decision I ever made. I tend to have exercise ADD so I get really into a specific workout and then get bored after a few months ( T25 & P90x etc.). I explained my workout history to Elizabeth when we first started working together and right from the start we did something different each week. I never know what to expect and I love it! Don’t let the cute little face fool you – she’s super tough and she pushes me harder and further each week! On the flip side she also understands how to properly motivate and encourage me when I’m struggling in a certain area or just feel like giving up. This is the only time I’ve ever been motivated enough to stick with a workout schedule each and every week without giving up! The main reason for me continuing and making this a way of life vs. a quick fix is that I started to see results right away. I feel firmer and stronger definitely look and feel better in clothes – especially my butt and thighs!
I know now that this is a lifestyle change for me and I’m ok with not having things happening overnight because I’m seeing small changes each week. Elizabeth has also helped me with proper workout form, easy routines to do at home, and a diet that works with my personal habits and tastes. The facilities are private, state of the art and right around the corner from my job which makes it really easy to schedule. I really cant say enough about this place. “I highly recommend Brian as a personal trainer. I found him last year after a doctor visit, when I learned that my hemoglobin A1c was measured at 6%, indicating an elevated risk for diabetes. I have a strong family history of diabetes, and I worried that before long I would have to take medication, just like my father who became diabetic around my age.
I was told that some people can delay diabetes by employing “lifestyle modifications”, but I didn’t think that this would work for me, as I don’t like to exercise. Still, given the alternatives – as vividly represented by my father’s deteriorating health – I figured I would try it.
Brian’s exercise and diet program turned out to be completely feasible. The physical demands were significant but not so taxing that I ever considered giving up. The time commitment was also reasonable and easily fit into my busy schedule.
Improvement was tangible, measurable and pretty quick. Last month, 7 months into the program, my hemoglobin A1c was measured again. It had dropped to 5.4%, which is well within the normal range. For the past ten years, I’ve kept myself in pretty good cardiovascular shape by running at least five miles almost every day. During this time, I never weight trained and thus neglected my upper body and abdomen. Last summer, I had more free time and made the decision to finally get serious about being in better shape. I made the commitment to get a personal trainer. After a bit of googling, I met Brian and have been working with him for the past 13 months. Under Brian’s supervision, I’ve completely changed my upper body.
